Quantum3D developed a free augmented reality (AR), maintenance training app for use with an iPhone or iPad called Quantum3D Maintenance Trainer.
The app comes with a demo that puts the user in the role of an aircraft mechanic training on the procedures for repairing a helicopter jet turbine engine. A floating engine appears in front of the user as the program provides step-by-step instructions for a critical repair operation.
Quantum3D said AR acts as a new way to approach training and enhance human-computer interfaces, and this project is just one of several AR projects being developed in the company’s lab.
AR programs can collect real-time data and then superimpose information in the form of interactive 3-D models and 2-D information in the world around the user, creating an interactive training environment without putting real-world hardware at risk
Quantum3D’s app is available now in Apple’s App Store.
