The pandemic-triggered global economic crisis has created an unprecedented challenge for the civil aviation industry. Flight schedules precipitously slashed. Airplanes parked. Nearly empty airports. And the human costs – employees furloughed, individuals and families thrown into uncertainty, financial straits, mental stress.

We are confident that the aviation industry will come back over time, once the coronavirus is brought under control. We believe the industry can become stronger than before. It will take time.

As a community of training and safety professionals, we cannot just wait for recovery to happen. We need to take steps to make it happen. And to develop an aviation future that is more efficient and effective than ever. Together, we must “Reset, Restart, and Rebuild” by collaborating to develop the future of aviation training.

Reset

Now is the time to establish the foundation of aviation’s future. A level set of shared objectives and best practices. And to apply the accepted, evolving and emerging methodologies and tools which can take training to a higher-quality level: CBTA, EBTA, Big Data, AI, XR, and more …

Restart

As operational schedules resume and ramp up, airlines are re-thinking routes, fleets, procedures, personnel … and how to improve their teams and partnerships to better serve passengers and restore confidence in the flying experience. The early-days objectives of re-opening the skies must emphasize caution and safety, lest virus outbreaks or air incidents damage the industry reputation.

Rebuild

In recent years, the broad community of training professionals -- across multiple industries and educational institutions – has made tremendous advances in understanding human interaction with complex machines and systems in safety-critical occupations. This is an ideal time to apply that research: to revamp the aviation training scheme as we rebuild the infrastructure and capacity … so we can seamlessly deal with the next shortage of skilled personnel which is sure to come. More effective because it will be more personalized and tailored. More cost-efficient because it will yield a higher percentage of mission-ready professionals.

Conference Schedule

27 Hours of presentations and panels by regulatory, airline, training, academic, associations and technical wxperts. Global ATS-V will bring together an array of world-class presenters in the spirit of the annual World Aviation Training Summit (WATS), European Airline Training Symposium (EATS), and other Halldale events.

In addition an Interactive virtual exhibition will showcase the industry’s latest emerging technologies and services.

Halldale and CAT magazine offer their thanks to the Global ATS-V sponsors for their support of the airline training community in enabling airlines, government and academic delegates to attend free of charge.

Across all three days, session one (0830-1300 UTC) will have a European-led focus; session two (1300-1900 UTC) will look at a broad range of global topics; and session three (1900-2300 UTC) will discuss specific North American issues.

The format for each one-hour session will include two presentations by subject experts, followed by a live question & answer panel discussion. Among the organisations represented:

An Array of Training Expertise

There has never before been this much civil aviation training and simulation expertise assembled for a single conference.

A highlight, as with EATS and WATS, will be updates from EASA and the FAA on current regulatory activities and anticipated rulemaking.

Cabin crew presentations will focus on pandemic-proof training, virtual training, CRM and recurrent training design, personal perceptions, mental wellness, human trafficking, and passengers with disabilities.

The maintenance training track will feature training in the new reality, repair station staffing, manufacturer customer training, and safety culture.

Regional airline focus will include an update on North American carrier conditions, the future of distance learning, augmented and virtual reality trends, and what commercial airlines can learn from the military.

Topics of interest to pilots (and others) range from artificial intelligence, AR/VR, big data applications, training tools, human factors, airmanship, UPRT, and ab initio programs to the pipeline for next-gen aviation professionals.

The Global ATS-V is led by co-chairs Capt. Jacques Drappier, who is also Chair of EATS and APATS; Rick Adams, who is also Chair of WATS; industry veteran Allyson Kukel, and Halldale Group conference coordinator Fiona Greenyer.

We will be joined in moderating sessions by Dr. Bill Johnson of the FAA; Capt. Paul Preidecker, former regional training leader; cabin crew training experts Dan Duren of Southwest and Anna Mellberg of Nova Airlines; and others.
