In fact, countering unmanned aerial vehicles commonly referred to as "drones", is a big worry. A recent example of this emerging menace is the use of drones during the battle for Mosul. IS employed them to monitor the terrain, control ambush attacks and select itineraries for car bombs - all in real time. Although these devices presently have only limited autonomy and payloads, future off-the-shelf drones will be able to execute even more perfidious attacks, including spraying of chemical and biological agents.
To that end, the new Task Group will analyse information on commercially available LSS aerial vehicles, and define different models with regard to flight behaviour and signature against different types of detectors. The final results should then contribute to design counter LSS systems that detect and neutralise the threat.
The first meeting of the new Task Group will be held during this year's ITEC (16-18 May 2017) in Rotterdam. For further information contact the chairman of the Task Group, Mr. Paolo Proietti ( paolo.proietti@leonardocompany.com).
