Ensuring the protection of lives and critical assets continues to be a top priority for the Kirtland Air Force Base Fire Emergency Services team. Col. Michael Power, 377th Air Base Wing commander, and Chief Master Sgt. Antonio Cooper, 377 ABW command chief, recently visited the department to witness firsthand the innovative training methods employed to maintain mission readiness.

During the visit, Col. Power and Chief Cooper toured the department’s training facilities. The tour highlighted advanced tools such as the FLAIM Systems virtual reality (VR) simulator, designed to provide firefighters with realistic fire suppression training in high-risk environments, without exposing them to real-world danger.

“This technology allows us to safely and effectively train for complex emergency scenarios,” said Jaime Jimenez, fire chief of Kirtland Fire Emergency Services. “While the simulation may be a bit stiff, if you can perform it on the simulation manikin, you can execute it in a real-world situation.”

The department also showcased its use of the SMART STAT Advanced High-Fidelity Simulation Manikin, a training tool enabling personnel to practice emergency medical procedures in highly realistic settings. Funded by the 377 ABW, the $103,000 manikin is part of a broader commitment to providing first responders with the latest training technology to enhance overall emergency preparedness.

“These advanced tools ensure our firefighters are fully prepared to respond to emergencies, both on base and in surrounding communities,” Jimenez continued. “We are constantly seeking new ways to improve our training methods, and the support from leadership allows us to stay ahead of evolving challenges.”

Throughout the visit, Col. Power and Chief Cooper engaged with the firefighters to discuss their experiences and challenges while reinforcing the importance of innovation in modern firefighting.
