A new virtual reality experience called "Weather the Storm" simulates storm surge flooding in coastal homes, aiming to boost evacuation compliance during hurricanes. Developed by researchers from the University of Georgia and Clemson University, the 15-minute VR simulation educates users on the risks of storm surge and prepares them with evacuation steps. The interactive experience, created with a $500,000 NOAA grant, has been tested by coastal communities and emergency groups.
Storm surge remains the leading cause of hurricane-related deaths, and VR offers a new way to highlight the dangers. The experience teaches participants to board up windows, pack evacuation bags, and prepare their homes. The tool aims to make evacuation orders more urgent and actionable, helping to protect residents as rising sea levels exacerbate storm surge threats.
