The University of Pretoria (UP) is advancing education and research with virtual (VR) and augmented reality (AR) through its Kumba Mining VR Centre. Established in 2015, the centre offers a safe, simulated environment for mine safety and design training, featuring a lecture hall, 3D theatre, and a VR simulator with 360° screens.

Additionally, the university has launched its Immersive Technology Lab to expand access to VR beyond mining engineering. The lab offers VR "play areas" for students and development pods for creating new virtual experiences, fostering learning and research.

By integrating VR, AR, and XR technologies, UP is preparing students with the technological skills needed for the future and enhancing education across multiple disciplines.
